A team put together by the state health department visited private hospitals like the Poona Hospital and Research Centre, Bharti Hospital, Nobel Hospital, Sahyadri Munot Hospital and the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Niramaya Hospital Chinchwad and Lokmanya Hospital Nigdi to gauge their ability to treat H1N1 positive patients.
The first private hospital to start treating H1N1 patients in the city will be the Sahyadri Munot Hospital on Shankarsheth Road which has 12 beds in the intensive care unit and 20 beds in the isolation ward.
Services at the hospital will commence from Wednesday, District Collector Chandrakant Dalvi said in a press briefing on Tuesday that the screening charges and the cost of Tamiflu will be borne by the government. The rest of the charges will have to be borne by the relatives of the patient. The cost of treatment at the Sahyadri Munot Hospital will be Rs 50,000 and above.
"The state health directorate has prepared a squad to visit private hospitals to keep a check on strict screening so that the guidelines issued by the central government are followed," said Dalvi. The monitoring will continue till the H1N1 patients are treated at these hospitals.
"Both hospitals - Sassoon and Naidu are under pressure. We need more and more ICUs and isolation wards," he said. Dalvi added that the hospitals nominated by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) in the state cannot deny starting specialized wards for H1N1 patients.
