Till a few days back, Mrs Subarmani Deve from Fiji could barely walk a few steps on her own. She could not perform her daily chores without anybody else’s support. But today, thanks to the surgery performed at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital by Dr Abhay Kulkarni, she can now walk by herself.
Mrs Subarmani Deve, a Fiji national with severe osteoarthritis of both knees & heavily overweight. She could barely walk for 4-5 steps and was on lots of painkillers. She was suffering from this problem for last 10 years.
Dr Abhay Kulkarni (MS Ortho, MRCS Edenburg,UK) Specialist Shoulder & Knee Surgeon from Sahyadri Speciality Hospital recently operated upon Mrs Deve. The technical difficulties included almost 50 degree of varus deformity with severe instability (subluxation). Her leg was bow-shaped which hampered her movements and thus daily activities.
Total knee replacement surgery was performed on both knees as she suffered from severe inflammatory tissue and major bone defect. The bone defect was tackled by doing bone grafting using the patients own bone. Special implants were used to give added stability to the knee. Critical evaluation & surgical expertise was required to balance the ligaments during the surgery.
After the surgery was performed, the patient could bend both the knees completely by 1 week after the surgery and the deformity is completely corrected. Mrs Deve, the patient, is completely pain- free and is walking full weight bearing with walker for support.
Mrs Deve & her relatives are very happy & thanked Sahyadri Speciality Hospital & Dr Abhay Kulkarni for their continuous support and help throughout my treatment. She also said, "It is so relieving that I can now walk by myself! I am truly thankful to Sahyadri Hospital!"
