Different types of eye problem we treat at Sahyadri Hospital

We have a multidisciplinary team of professionals who work collaboratively to provide extensive results to patients. They provide a wide range of assistance ranging from regular eye checkups to rare and complex surgery. Apart from eye problems, they also look into other medical conditions like diabetes, thyroid problem and immunity to come to the root cause of the eye problem. They do this by working collaboratively with your neurologist, oncologist and endocrinologist. Following are the problems you may experience in eye disease:

  • Cataract

Patients going through cataract problem feels like a cloud has built up in front of their eyes. It mainly develops because of an injury in the eyes’ lens that changes the tissue or aging. Some inherited health disorders can also cause medical problems that can increase the chance of developing cataracts. It can also appear due to other eye conditions, medical conditions like diabetes, or past eye surgery. In addition, it can also develop as a side effect of using long-term steroid medicines.

  • Cornea

The cornea is the eye portion where light reflects and helps us get a clear image of the surroundings. In cornea disease, people go through the problem of distortion, clouding, scaring, and eventually blindness. There are various other cornea problems that a person can go through, like injuries, allergies, keratitis, dry eye and corneal dystrophies.

In injuries, the cornea usually heals on its own. However, deep scratches can cause vision problems and corneal scarring. In allergies due to pollen, the patient goes through irritation which results in conjunctivitis. In keratitis, the eyes become red and swell up. These are actually a type of infection that develops because of contact lenses. Dry eyes develop when the tear glands cannot produce enough tear, which makes it very uncomfortable to people and causes vision problems. While, in corneal dystrophies, the cornea gets clouded up, and the person loses clear vision.

  • Retina

Retinal problems can vary; however, most of them cause visual problems. These types of diseases can affect any part of the patient’s retina, i.e., at the thin layer present at the back of his/her eyeball. This part of the eye consists of millions of light-sensitive cells and nerve cells whose purpose is to receive information and organize it for proper understanding. When they receive an image, they send the information to the brain, enabling you to see it. You can grow many types of retinal problems like a retinal tear, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinitis pigmentosa, and macular degeneration.

  • Glaucoma

Glaucoma includes a group of eye conditions that can cause severe damage to the optic nerve. It mainly arises because of abnormally high pressure in the eye. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of why people have blindness. Glaucoma usually does not have any warning signs. The effects are so gradual that you won’t be able to detect you are suffering from glaucoma until you reach an advanced stage. Thus, it is very important to go on regular checkups to avoid such conditions.

Opthalmic cancer

Our hospital’s ophthalmologic cancer unit provides comprehensive care to adults and children suffering from eye malignancies. We are an internationally renowned center carrying excellent care of complex cancers. Moreover, our physician makes sure you get proper treatment of the following types of cancer:

  • Squamous cell Carcinoma

This is a type of malignant tumor that develops in the membranous lining of the eyelids and eyeballs. When going through this problem, the patients suffer from eye irritation, unilateral red-eye and conjunctival mass. It is the second most common type of cancer and usually develops because of harmful sun rays. It can be highly dangerous to many people as it can result in loss of vision and severe deaths.

  • Retinoblastoma

It is another type of eye cancer that begins in the area of the retina. It is a malignant tumor that develops in the back of the eyeball exclusively in children. The symptoms that you may notice in this type of disease is that the eyes will appear larger, pain in the eye, cloudiness or discoloration, redness, cross-eye direction, and vision problem.

  • Sebaceous Carcinoma

This type of eye cancer is very rare which starts developing in the eye’s oil gland. At first, the lump will be painless, and the eyelid’s skin will become thick. However, as it grows to an advanced stage, it may bleed. To treat this cancer and stop it from spreading, you may have to go through surgery.

  • Uveal Melanoma

Uveal melanoma is another most common type of malignant tumor that develops inside the eye. It involves eye parts, including the ciliary body, iris, and choroid. The tumor arises from the pigmented cells known as uveal melanocytes, which give pigment to the eyes. Moreover, the visible symptoms in patients are pain, irritation, blurred vision, pressure in the eye, and change in the pupil.

Pediatric ophthalmology

Sahyadri Hospital has a highly experienced and qualified pediatric ophthalmologist team who solves every kind of eye disease in children. They have years of experience looking after eye difficulty in children, examining the reason for the reading and learning problem and providing medical treatment accordingly.

The experts first diagnose the problem and then suggest an effective treatment option. When dealing with children, the problem because more complex as, unlike adults, the kids are not able to say what is the actual problem. So the specialist has to be experienced to know exactly the problem by analyzing the symptoms.

Oculoplastic center

We have a separate care unit where our specialized ophthalmologists carry out oculoplastic surgery relating to the different areas of the eyes. These include eyelids, eye sockets, some parts of the face and tear ducts. This type of surgical treatment is necessary for many reasons, like removing eye bags, eyebrow lifts, lower and upper eyelid blepharoplasty, etc.

Our surgeons are highly trained and have years of experience to provide recognizable results relating to eyelid and facial surgery in adults and adolescents. This unit focuses on plastic and reconstructive surgery to provide different aesthetic and rejuvenating outcomes to people.

Centre for Retinal disease

There is an in-depth treatment available in the Sahyadri Hospital to treat many problems like the ones mentioned below:

  • Retinal detachment: This problem arises when the eye fluid passes through the retinal tear and leads the retina to displace from the underlying tissue layer.
  • Retinal tear: It occurs when the gel-like substance present in the eye shrinks and tugs on the underlying tissue of the back eye.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Patients who have diabetes often face deterioration of blood vessels at the back of their eye. It also results in a fluid-leak into and under the retina. Due to which the patients suffer from blurred vision and swelling.
  • Macular degeneration: In this condition, the center part of the retina deteriorates, causing blind spots and blurred vision in people. This disease can be further classified into two types wet and dry macular degeneration. Many people first experience dry macular degeneration and then progress to wet one.
  • Epiretinal membrane: This membrane is a soft tissue-like scar that looks like cellophane lying above the retina. When this membrane gets pulled up, it causes distorted vision, due to which everything appears blurred.
  • Macular hole: It is a small defect that many people suffer at the center of their retina present in the back of the eye. The hole appears because of abnormal traction between the vitreous and the retina, further causing injury.
  • Retinitis pigmentosa: This is a type of inherited degenerative disorder. It causes a huge impact on the retina and results in loss of night vision and side vision.
